Ciné Liminal meets Cinema Pernambucano
Special Session with Short Films in Collaboration with Cinema Pernambucano
www.cineliminal.ch Between holidays and the new semester start, we are organizing a SPECIAL FRIDAY with a film bridge between Brazil and Switzerland. On the 6th of September, the ciné liminal meets the independent cinema program “Encontros do cinema pernambucano” which takes place in the Bar Super8 in the “cinema street” of Recife, Brazil. It's gonna be an intercultural cinema session with 4 Swiss and 3 Brazilian films, happening the same day in Berne and Recife. Thor Neukranz, brazilian filmmaker from Encontros do Cinema Pernambucano will moderate the evening in Berne and Zoë Beer, Swiss filmmaker and part of the ciné liminal will moderate the evening in Recife. The evening in Berne will conclude with the classic debate with the filmmakers Tila Chitunda, Roman Stocker, Noémi Knobil and Flora Gerber, from Cine Liminal. In the Pernambuco capital the talk is also tradition and will feature the Pernambucan University film professors and filmmakers Mannu Costa and Marcos Buccini, as well as Wandryu Figuerêdo. Perspectives: Brazil – Switzerland Deslocamento, Paraíso e Caos | Tila Chitunda | 2020 | 9min Tila Chitunda, who grew up in Olinda, Brazil and now lives in Switzerland reflects on questions of migration, belonging, racism and colonialism. Filming during the pandemic she asks: Airplanes have taken over the skies again - But how did we get here? Sobre o CARNEval | Zoë Beer | 2024 | 8min This short film is the fruit of the physical, visual, sonorous and emotional experiences and impressions that Zoë Beer gathered at the carnival in Olinda and Recife, Brazil. In the film, she expresses these experiences through the montage of images and a text written by her, which poetically reflects on bodies, free bodies in this liminal moment of society. Elos da Matriarca | Thor Neukranz | 2021 | 20min During the pandemic the young filmmaker Thor Neukranz made this film about his grandmother Luzinete who lives in the periphery of Recife. Through archive material we get to know more about her and the family’s history and is completed by film footage from 2020 that accompanies how the Matriarch is dealing with the situation and the difficulties during the pandemic. Nani | Roman Stocker | 2017 | 30min The filmmaker’s 89 year-old grandmother (swiss-german: Nani), finds time - after her husband dies - to look back on her life and deliberate her thoughts about aging and dying. The film was shot during one year, showing an intimate portrait about the process Nani is going through after the death of her husband, the chores of her everyday routine living now alone and her reflections about being near the border between life and death. Nimbus | Marcos Buccini | 2020 | 11min In a barren and almost dead land, a man lights a candle and prays. A storm begins to brew. Nimbus is a fable about faith, religion and the power of nature. Crevette | Jill Vágner, Elina Huber, Noémi Knobil, Sven Bachmann | 2023 | 5min The animated short film shows the process of a woman, facing a shrimp in her fridge which transforms into an embryo. As it is gradually coming to life, the freezer bursts open, transporting Jeanie into her subconscious where she finally faces her fear of pregnancy. Reprise | Saskia Bulletti, Livia Neuenschwander, Leance Volschenk, Carine Chrast | 2022 | 3min This short animation film by the young female filmmakers Saskia, Livia, Lens and Carine broaches the issue of abuse in a subtle and impactful way, showing the situation of a girl who lives with her family and stepfather, the fox. |
